Disney announced that the release of the live action remake of “Mulan” will be pushed back to 2019. This is to make way for the adaptation of another Disney classic, the “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms”.
Mulan makes way for Clara and Nutcracker
The adaptation of the classic film “Mulan” was originally scheduled to debut in the big screens in November 2018. Delay in the remake’s release date was confirmed when no “Mulan” casting announcements were made during Disney’s D23 Expo.
Disney announced that the release of “Mulan” was pushed back to around November or December of the year 2019.
It is no secret that the ethnic backgrounds of lead characters in classic Disney movie remakes is becoming a huge concern. After reports that director Guy Ritchie was having a very hard time looking for the perfect lead actor to fly the magic carpet, the casting for “Aladdin” received criticisms from dismayed fans who believe that the roster of leads has been “whitewashed”.
From the beginning, Walt Disney has promised that the live action “Mulan” will feature an all-Chinese main cast. With the criticisms over Jasmine and Aladdin, fans are now concerned that the delay in its release has something to do with its casting as well.
Misty Copeland is Clara in 'The Nutcracker and the Four Realms' remake
Disney’s D23 Expo revealed that the live action remake of another Disney classic movie “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is taking over “Mulan” in 2018. The live action remake of the tale will be directed by multi-awarded director Lasse Hallstrom. The new version of the classic ballet story is based on a modern script adaptation of Ashleigh Powell.
The remake is inspired by a book written by E.T.A. Hoffmann entitled “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. The adaptation of “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is set on Christmas season. It circles around the story of young Clara who loves ballet with all of her heart. Clara’s favorite toy nutcracker will come alive and will bring her to a magical kingdom ruled by dolls.
The live action remake of “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is set to take to the theaters on November 2018. The ballet inspired movie will be released in place of the previously announced launch date of the live action remake of “Mulan”. Mackenzie Foy from “Interstellar” will play the role of Clara. Alongside her is Misty Copeland, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and Matthew Macfadyen.
