“Wonder Woman” is currently the major summer hit, breaking the records of previous blockbusters. So far, the film has grossed over $100 million at the box office, and it’s just the beginning. Early projections revealed that “Wonder Woman” will earn from $75 to $85 million in its opening weekend.
With $100 million in the United States and Canada and an additional $121 million internationally, the film proved critics wrong.
Also, the smashing success of “Wonder Woman” has opened the doors of Hollywood for Patty Jenkins. She has proved everyone wrong that a female cannot direct a good film, and now we look forward to her next project.
The domestic and international grosses
Variety reports that “Wonder Woman” has grossed over $99 million domestically and up to $120 million internationally against a production budget of $130 million (excluding the marketing costs).
Thus, “Wonder Woman” is one of the most expensive films ever directed by a female. It has surpassed Sam Taylor-Johnson’s hit “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which grossed over $80 million in its opening weekend and was released in February 2015.
Also, Catherine Hardwicke’s 2008 blockbuster “Twilight” grossed $68 million in its first three days. “Wonder Woman,” on the other hand, has grossed $72 million in its first three days.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the audiences for this film are from 19 to 35 years old. The United States women loved the concept of a female superhero and were excited to watch “Wonder Woman.” So, the film got 57% female audiences and 43% male viewers.
It would not be wrong to say that it is the 16th superhero movie ever to earn over $100 million in its opening weekend, beating out “Thor: The Dark World,” “Iron Man,” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Still, the film’s first week’s collection is not as big as “Suicide Squad” ($131 million), “Man of Steel” ($110 million), and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ($160 million).
The ratings
“Wonder Woman” has received positive comments from film critics and audiences, with some of them praising the performance of Gal Gadot and others are admiring its storyline and cinematography. On Rotten Tomatoes, its average rating is 92% based on 254 critics, while Metacritic assigns it a score of 79 out of 100 based on 45 reviews.
Audience polled by CinemaScore gave the film a "B+" grade on an A+ to F scale. A. O. Scott from New York Times writes that “Wonder Woman” is an impressive film with incredible action sequences. Michael Phillips from The Chicago Tribune calls it a far better movie than “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” and “Captain America: The First Avenger.”
