The owner of the Oprah Winfrey Network is now one of the most successful media personalities in the world. But she achieved success after a series of unfortunate events in her life. Oprah Winfrey opened up about her dark past without hesitation and the reason why until now she remained unmarried.

The media mogul revealed that she was raped by a 19-year-old cousin when she was barely nine years old as reported by the Jasmine Brand. After she was abused, her cousin brought her to an ice cream house and bought her some ice cream with blood still oozing down her legs.

Five years after, she was also abused by her uncle that resulted in her pregnancy.

Oprah Winfrey attempted suicide when she was a teenager

In desperation, she attempted to commit suicide. She thought of taking laundry detergent to get rid of her baby. She wanted to stop her pregnancy by killing herself. She revealed that at her age she was not yet knowledgeable of ways to end her life. If she had the Internet before, she said she could have searched for ways to commit suicide.

Fate favored the then lost and desperate teenager. She had a miscarriage which she considered as a blessing in disguise. She said that when she lost her baby, she knew it was her second chance and decided to turn her life around.

Winfrey succeeded in life despite her difficult circumstances. She was able to establish her empire and is now one of the world’s billionaires.

Winfrey started her cable network and became one of television's long-term talk show hosts. Her show “The Oprah Winfrey Show” aired for 25 years. The girl who grew up in extreme poverty (literally wearing dresses made from potato sacks) was given a chance at education when she was sent to her father who prioritized her studies.

Her traumatic past did not hinder Oprah Winfrey from achieving honors in school. At 19, she got a job at a radio station and eventually became a host. She became popular until her show got syndicated internationally.

The weight loss advocate revealed that she and long-time partner Stedman Graham did not tie the knot because she believes that she not for marriage. They were engaged in November 1992, but their wedding did not happen until today.
