The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s television corner continues to chug along. Even as ABC’s “Agents of SHIELD” takes a break in anticipation for its return with a fifth season, another major project that has been teased for so long is finally engaging in some major promotional activity.

Inhumans” finally got its first official trailer released, showing a first peek at the principal characters of the Inhuman race. Several members of the Inhumans have been previewed in past seasons of “Agents of SHIELD” and one of the main characters there is even revealed to be as such.

This time, however, it’s the Royal Family of the elusive Inhuman society that takes center stage in preparation for their premiere also on ABC.

Superhuman political thriller

The trailer is unique as in a way it’s as much a theatrical trailer as a TV one. ABC Studios and Marvel Television are developing “Inhumans” alongside IMAX. As a result, it will actually premiere its first two episodes on September in 1,000 IMAX cinemas across 71 countries around the world.

After the IMAX theater premiere, the show will start on ABC later in that month with additional content not seen in the cinemas. The previewed scenes in the trailer do well to set up the backstory and preliminary events to kick off the series.

It starts with the revelation of Attilan, the secret homeland of the Inhumans in a habitable region of Earth’s moon. There King Black Bolt (Anson Mount) and his queen Medusa (Serinda Swan) rule over their people in a time of a restless peace.

A crisis erupts when Black Bolt’s brother Maximus (Iwan Rheon) stages a military coup after swaying the Inhuman population to follow him as king.

Following a confrontation with Maximus Black Bolt is spirited away to Earth by the Royal Family’s giant canine companion Lockjaw (a CGI creation). There he and the rest of his family must survive in the human world and find a way to stop Maximus from his master plan of conquest.

Inhuman powers

As established in the comics and ABC’s “Agents of SHIELD” series, the Inhumans are an offshoot of humanity that is able to gain superhuman abilities (and sometimes dramatic transformations) from exposing themselves to the alien substance Terrigen. These powers are showcased in the trailer with Lockjaw the dog’s teleportation and hinted with Black Bolt’s enforced silence. His voice can discharge destructive power, with even a whisper enough to destroy a city. A scene shows Black Bolt involuntarily grunting – and sending a car flying as a result.
