A "Game of Thrones" actress is set to join Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) and Sigourney Weaver (Dr. Grace Augustine) in the "Avatar" sequels. Oona Chaplin has boarded the production, which will begin in September, and she will be in all four movie installments.
Oona Chaplin will reportedly play the role of Varang, who is one of the central characters. She is described as "strong and vibrant."
The actress, who is a descendant of Charlie Chaplin, played Talisa Stark/Talisa Maegyr in “Game of Thrones. “ The character was unceremoniously killed off in the Red Wedding.
She also worked in shows like “Taboo” with Tom Hardy and “Black Mirror.”
Aside from Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Oona Chaplin, the sequels will also have Cliff Curtis, the star of “Fear the Walking Dead.”
What’s the sequel all about?
The plot to the sequels has been a well-kept secret. But Lightstorm Entertainment’s Jon Landau told Deadline each movie will be a stand-alone story with a conclusion. “But when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four movies will create an even larger connected epic saga for audiences around the world,” he added.
"Avatar 2" will not be out in theaters until December 2020. The succeeding installments, meanwhile, have also been earmarked for a December 2021, 2024 and 2025 release.
Why the long gap for the 'Avatar' sequels?
Director James Cameron explained that the delay in coming up with a follow-up to the 2009 film was intended. Cameron told CNN he wanted to create an "overall vision" and he’s not worried the years in between the sequels will hurt the movie’s popularity.
“The thing is, my focus isn’t on 'Avatar 2,'" he said.
"My focus is on 'Avatar' 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it."
What did the first movie accomplish?
"Avatar" takes place in the 22nd century, where the Earth has become a wasteland and humans now inhabit a planet called Pandora via science. The 2009 film used advanced technology in creating the world of Pandora on the big screen.
“Avatar” was nothing like anyone has seen in movies before and James Cameron was widely acclaimed for his vision. Apart from the use of technology, the director also created an alien world with its own language and culture.
The movie received Oscars for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects and was cited as Best Picture by other award-giving bodies in 2010. The movie raked a worldwide box office earning of $2.7 billion, the highest-grossing film of all time.
