Up until recently, things have been quiet with Trinidadian-born American rapper Nicki Minaj. Early this year there was the news of her finally breaking things off with rapper Meek Mill whom she started dating back in 2015. Then there was her continuing feud with fellow female rapper Remy Ma, a spat that is continuing on social media.

Speaking of social media, that’s what Minaj has been busy with lately. After posting an invitation on Twitter for her fans to join her at a music awards ceremony, a (probable) joking reply by some of her fans has transformed her page into an impromptu charity.

‘Pay my tuition instead’

It all began when Nicki Minaj tweeted about a contest offering any fans replying to her Twitter account a chance to join her in attending the 2017 Billboard Music Awards on May 21. A follower then posted a bold reply: rather than footing the mini-contest winner’s expenses to accompany her to the awards show, Nicki could simply just pay for the guy's college tuition, loans and other fees.

It was a remarkably daring suggestion, but Minaj saw things differently. At midnight on Saturday, May 6, she responded with an even better idea for a “contest." Nicki would gladly cover the school bills of some lucky college fans of hers. The only requirement, she said, was documented proof that the prospective “awardees” in question are straight-A students, with grades that she can verify with their respective schools.

Once proven genuine, she would pay the fees from her own pocket.

Fairy Godmother rapper

One thing can be said for Nicki Minaj fans: they don’t look gift horses in the mouth.

The first to tweet his credentials, along with a tuition bill of $3,000 for three college classes, got this encouraging reply from the rapper:

After that, her Twitter account flooded with petitioning Nicki fans asking her to pay for not just their tuition, but also their student loans, books and other school supplies.

She gamely acquiesced to their requests. The total bill averages that she covered ranged from just about $500 to $1,069.

That wasn’t going to last forever, though. At last Minaj put an end to the tuition charity event by tweeting this closing statement:

The Billboard Music Awards that Nicki is showing up for will be at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 25. None of her Twitter fans will be coming with her as originally promised, but some are already happy regardless.
