Fans waiting for the "Hellboy" reboot would be thrilled to know that negotiations have started yet again. "Stranger Things" star David Harbour is in the middle of talks to take on the role, which Ron Perlman previously played on the big screen.
Treated as a "Hellboy" reboot, Millennium Films is reportedly also in talks with more producers and a potential director. Unfortunately, it won't be Guillermo Del Toro, who did the first two films, sitting at the helm of this relaunch.
Who is directing the reboot?
The studio has its eye on "Game of Thrones" director Neil Marshall for the new "Hellboy." He's tasked to translate his vision from a script written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola, the creator of the "Hellboy" comic book series.
The new movie is tentatively entitled, "Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen." Mignola has, in fact, confirmed the reboot in a post on Facebook.
Why is Del Toro out?
It's unclear why Guillermo Del Toro is now out of the project. The Hollywood Reporter hinted the director wanted a bigger budget for the new installment, but the studio was unwilling to fund his request. With Del Toro's exit, Ron Perlman, who played Hellboy in both movies, is also deemed out of the project. Will fans embrace David Harbour should he agree to do the film?
Del Toro was quite instrumental in creating the film franchise with Mignola. Both worked together for the first movie, released in 2004, as well as the follow-up in 2008.
Though the first film did well domestically and internationally and was lauded by critics, the follow-up movie failed at the box office as it came head to head with Christoper Nolan's "The Dark Knight."
Despite this, Del Toro and Mignola continued with hatching ideas and plans for the third film. Perlman was also in on the project, but he was not optimistic it would materialize.
Del Toro and Mignola tapped different studios to make "Hellboy 3" happen to no avail. Sony was first involved in the movie and Universal financed the sequel.
Who is 'Hellboy'?
Mike Mignola first came our with "Hellboy" in 1993 as an indie comic series. The demon character, who was raised by a professor, fought evil forces from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.
Hellboy has superhuman strength as well as an ability to heal from his injuries. He's also a master of languages. While strong, Hellboy also uses a variety of weapons to fight evil forces, including grenades, herbs, and holy items.
