This weekend saw the commencement of the Billboard Music Awards or BBMAs 2017, in which artists from all genres came together to honor the very best.

The celebration was highlighted by several wins from Drake, who was awarded not one but 13 awards this year, as well as Cher, who won the Icon Award.

Other winners were Beyonce for Top Female Artist, Top Touring Artist, and Top R&B Artist, Twenty One Pilots for Top Rock Artist, Top Duo/Group and Top Radio Songs Artist, and "The Voice" coach Blake Shelton for Top Country Artist.

Amidst the celebration, the ceremony also paid their respects to Soundgarden founder Chris Cornell, whose sudden death shocked the entire nation, if not the world.

In fact, Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds took to the stage to honor the late artist and musician in a moving tribute.

Artist's death was sudden and unexplained

Imagine Dragons lead Dan Reynolds took to the stage during the BBMAs 2017 to share some words about the late Chris Cornell, who in a shocking turn of events, was found to have committed suicide in his Detroit hotel room following a show on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the 52-year old was found on the floor of his hotel bathroom, after he hung himself. As per CNN, the medical examiner concluded that he died of hanging. Hours later, his wife Vicky Cornell released a statement, saying that she was able to speak to her husband before his untimely death and that he may have taken an extra dose of anti-anxiety medication Ativan that night.

The known side effects of the drug was suicidal thoughts. Her statement read, "What happened is inexplicable, and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details."

Chris Cornell hailed as a 'true innovator' during the awards ceremony

During Sunday's BBMAs 2017, Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds honored the late Soundgarden frontman by calling him a "true innovator" and a "musical architect" who was also the "pioneer on the cutting edge of the Seattle grunge movement."

According to Stevens, Cornell was "a prolific songwriter, a legendary performer, a singer who had a voice for the ages, and a philanthropist." Most may not know that the Chris & Vicky Cornell Foundation, which was formed in 2012, is a non-profit that aims to help children who are vulnerable, at risk, or are a disadvantage.

Cornell's funeral set for Friday, May 26

Chris Cornell will be laid to rest on Friday, May 26, as per USA Today. His attorney Kirk Pasich made the announcement, saying that the late Cornell has been transported back to Los Angeles, where he will be laid to rest.
