'Fate of the Furious' is continuing to have a strong showing at the box office worldwide following its record-setting opening weekend. With only two weekends under its wheels, the film is getting closer to the impressive $1 billion mark and becoming only the 30th movie in history to hit that number. Now, there is talk about a spin-off movie being made.
Lapping the box office once again
After its second weekend at the box office, 'Fate of the Furious' is still cruising along. It has already been estimated to have made $163.6 million at the domestic box office and $744.8 internationally, for a smooth total of $908.4 million worldwide.
'Fate' held the top spot at the domestic box office, pulling in $38.7 million over its second weekend. It is making less than its predecessor 'Furious 7', which had made over $250 million domestically after its first two weekends.
After a record-setting start in China last week, making $192 million in its opening weekend, the second weekend only brought in $58.5 million. That gives 'Fate' a ten-day total of $318.9 million in China, the second highest-grossing U.S. release in the country, only behind its predecessor 'Furious 7.' Even in its second weekend, 'Fate of the Furious' was still in first place in every market around the world. The film had record opening weekends in Poland ($2.5 million), Romania ($1.7 million) and Serbia & Montenegro ($260,000).
The movie also continued performing in other big international markets. It made $23.4 million in Russia, $24.4 million in Germany, $26.2 million in Brazil, $29.3 million in the U.K. and Ireland and $29.9 million in Mexico. The movie still has yet to open in Japan, where it will premiere on April 28th.
A spin-off in the works?
Despite eight movies and two short films as part of the Fast and the Furious franchise, it is clear that there will be not slowing down for the series. The next two movies in the franchise have already been slated for 2019 and 2021 release dates. The series has also become Universal's biggest franchise of all time, and with the records that 'Fate of the Furious' has set at the box office, it should be no surprise that there is a talk of a spin-off.
According to reports from Variety, Universal has already hired a veteran of the franchise Chris Morgan to write a screenplay for the spin-off. That spin-off will supposedly revolve around Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham's characters teaming up to go after villain Charlize Theron's character, who was just introduced in 'Fate.'
