A night of surprises thrilled the audience at the 89th Academy Awards that aired Sunday, February 26, 2017, in Hollywood. The stars celebrated the crème de la crème of the season’s most rousing features that included the exuberant musical “La La Land”. Ryan Gosling received a Best Actor nomination for his role as a disenchanted jazz musician trying to make his mark in a modern day Los Angeles. Audiences tuned in from around the globe to see the Oscar nominee and his mystery date that soon took Twitter by storm. The 36-year-old actor attended the Awards without his longtime companion, Eva Mendes, as Twitter fans began to post about the unknown blonde seated next to him.

Twitter bombshell

Twitter timelines exploded until her identity was revealed as Ryan Gosling’s older sibling, Mandi. Gosling fans deftly swung from tweeting about the actor to dishing about his sister. The tweets and posts continued after “La La Land” was trumped by a Best Picture win by the drama "Moonlight".

“Who is Mandy Gosling,” surged across Twitter user accounts as pics of the brother and sister duo flooded social media pages. Ryan commiserated with media before the Oscars on the red carpet and shared his “surprise” about moviegoers’ love of “La La Land”.

'I know we loved making the film', Gosling reminisced about working on the set, but we had no idea that it would have such an impact on people at all." The Canadian actor has frequently acknowledged hailing from Mormon roots and having a supportive family.

I owe any capacity to understand women to “my mother and big sister,” Gosling has voiced throughout his film career. They taught me to “respect women” in a way that has also helped me grow in how “I approach my work as an actor.”

The Goslings clan

The Gosling siblings’ night at this year’s Oscars was not the first time the two have shared the limelight.

Mandi joined Ryan at the 2008 Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Gotham Awards in 2006, and the 2007 Academy Awards with his sister Mandi and his mother Donna, for his Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination in the feature “Half Nelson”.

Gosling recently wrapped his role as a law enforcer in the highly anticipated sci-fi thriller “Blade Runner 2049” and is in pre-production on the Neil Armstrong space opera, “First Man”.
