joss whedon helped to shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking the characters introduced in their own movies and the directing the most successful comic book movie of all time in "The Avengers." However, the one thing that Whedon always wanted to do was bring a female comic book character to the big screen and he might get the chance now. Variety reports that Joss Whedon is in negotiations to direct "Batgirl" for rival DC Comics.

Joss Whedon and female superheroes

This isn't the first time that Joss Whedon has talked to DC Comics about bringing one of their female heroes to the big screen. Whedon had big ideas for Wonder Woman and wanted to direct a movie about the Amazon. DC Comics rejected his idea at the time, with some rumors indicating that fans didn't want to see a female superhero leading a movie. A lot has changed since then. "Wonder Woman" actually comes out in the next month and DC Comics seems to be beating Marvel Comics to the punch when it comes to female heroes.

There might be no one better to direct "Batgirl" either, as Joss Whedon is the man who brought the best female superhero of all time to TV in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

"Batgirl" and DC Comics

So, who is "Batgirl" and why should fans care? First of all, while Marvel Comics has a female "Captain Marvel" movie coming out sometime in the future with Brie Larson in the lead role, DC Comics should have three different female-led movies out by that time.

"Wonder Woman" comes out this next month, "Gotham City Sirens" with Harley Quinn has been greenlit and now there is "Batgirl" with Joss Whedon. For fans who don't know, Batgirl is Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon from the Batman world. The Commissioner will make his debut in "Justice League" as played by J.K. Simmons, so it is exciting to see that he might get a bigger role following the "Justice League" movie.

Fans of DC Comics might remember that Barbara was crippled by The Joker and became Oracle but that was retconned in the New DC 52 and the word is that this movie will take place in that world.
