The first new "Saturday Night Live" episode of 2017 will air this weekend, on Saturday, January 14. The host and musical guests for the night are both first timers to the historic "SNL" stage.
Felicity Jones to host
Actress Felicity Jones will do the honors of hosting this weekends new "Saturday Night Live" episode. Jones' most recent movie role is as Jyn Erso in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." 33-year-old Jones has a number of television and film accolades under her belt, but this will be her first time taking a stab at the hosting duties of "Saturday Night Live."
The English actress was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress two years ago for her performance in the film "The Theory of Everything." Since then, she has appeared in many movies, with her most notable being her most recent, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "A Monster Calls," both which were released last month.
Fans of Jones are excited and looking forward to see how she does as a host. Social media and the internet have been swarming with promos of the upcoming show, and the actress has been actively endorsing her first "Saturday Night Live" appearance.
Music from Sturgill Simpson
The musical guest for this Saturday is Sturgill Simpson. Simpson is a country music singer with three albums to his credit. He wasn't very well known until his third album, "A Sailor's Guide to Earth," was released last year. The album was so successful that it earned Simpson two nominations for Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammy Awards. The 59th annual Grammy Awards show will air on February 12 on CBS.
Actor and comedian Aziz Ansari will host "SNL" next week, and rapper Big Sean will be the musical guest. Ansari is best known for his work on the NBC sitcom "Parks and Recreation" alongside Amy Poehler. The show was on the air for six years and is now in syndication. This will be the first time hosting for Ansari, and the first time that Big Sean will be the show's musical guest.
