AsMarvel's Agent Carter begins its second season on ABC, its been almost a year since we last saw Hayley Atwell portraying the beautiful 1940's secret agent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If its been that long since you've seen the first season (or if you haven't yet watched the first season at all), then a quick refresher would serve you well. You should also be familiar with how she fits in between the first two Captain Americamovies.
Agent Carter provides a lot of background to much of what's going on in theMarvel Cinematic Universe. Both seasons have been scheduled by ABC to air during the mid-season break ofMarvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
This show provides a lot of context and backstory to what eventually becomesS.H.I.E.L.D, Iron Man, Black Widow, and much more.
The characters
- Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell): Former love interest of Captain America, Carter works for the Strategic Scientific Reserve. Believing that Steve Rogers (Captain America) is gone for good, Peggy goes to work for the SSR doing office work. During Season 1, she's also secreting helping Howard Stark prove his innocence as he's framed for selling weapons to enemy states.
- Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper): The father of Tony Stark (Iron Man) and founder of Stark Industries. He is a genius and an inventor. He also has a butler named Edwin Jarvis.
- Edwin Jarvis (James D'Arcy): The inspiration for Iron Man's J.A.R.V.I.S.operating system, Edwin serves as Carter's assistant in proving Stark innocent.
- Jack Thompson (Chad Michael Murray): An SSR agent with a WWII military background. He's one of the SSR agents looking for Stark during Season 1.
- Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj): An SSR agent with a crippled leg, also a WWII veteran, also looking for Stark. By the time Season 2 begins, Sousa is the chief of the West Coast SSR office, while Thompson becomes the chief of the East Coast office.
- Roger Dooley (Shea Whigham): Dooley was the SSR chief during Season 1, but near the end of the Season 1 he dies saving the rest of the SSR.
- Dottie Underwood (Bridget Regan): Peggy's neighbor. It turns out she works for Leviathan, the Soviet enemies of the SSR.
- Dr. Ivchenko/Johann Fennhoff (Ralph Brown): Also a secret agent of Leviathan, he can hypnotize people to do as he says. He was the man who framed Stark in Season 1. He is arrested and imprisoned at the end of Season 1.
- Arnim Zola (Toby Jones): He only appears in the final episode of Season 1, as he's already imprisoned where they take Fennhoff. Zola worked for Red Skull during WWII, attempting to make super soldiers. He was an enemy of Captain America.

Marvel tie-ins (MCU)
- Captain America: The First Avenger andCaptain America: The Winter Soldier. Peggy Carter played the love interest of Captain America in the first film. As the movie ends, she believes Steve Rogers/Captain America to be dead. At the end of the second film, when she's 94-years-old, she is visited by Captain America, who has retained his youth.
- The Red Room, Black Widow and Winter Soldier project. The origins of Black Widow are revealed in the first season ofAgent Carter, as they mention the activities related to the Red Room, where operatives like Black Widow were trained by the Soviet Union. The origins of the Winter Soldier project are also revealed in Season 1.
- Iron-Man. Tony Stark's dad is a key character inAgent Carter, as is his butler. These are both important characters in the history of Tony Stark.
Season One summary
From the very first episode, Peggy Carter works for the SSR and is trying to help Howard Stark prove that he's innocent.
His butler, Edwin Jarvis, assists her in this task. The organization Leviathan are the enemy, and they have framed Stark. He is proven innocent by the end of the first season, but the major villains (Dottie Underwood and Johann Fennhoff) are still alive.
