'It's a Wonderful Life' (1946)
This classic film features George Bailey, a man who has many problems. It’s now Christmas time, and he is considering ending it all. However, his guardian angel, Clarence, comes to the rescue just as he is about to jump off a bridge and shows George what his home town would have been if he hadn’t performed his good deeds over the years. The film stars James Stewart and Donna Reed and can be viewed on Amazon video, YouTube and Google Play.
‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ (2000)
There’s nothing like the Grinch to bring Christmas cheer – if he is played by Jim Carrey, that is. This wonderfully wacky, green character starts off by stealing presents, decorations and food from everyone in town until he finally gets a touch of the true Christmas spirit. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” can be viewed on Netflix, Amazon Video, Google Play and Vudu.
‘Prancer’ (1989)
“Prancer” tells the story of a young girl, played by Rebecca Harrell Tickell, who is trying to cope with the loss of her mother. To make things worse, her father (played by Sam Elliott) is facing depression and alcoholism at his loss. The girl is desperate to find something she can believe in and is convinced that a lost reindeer is really one of Santa’s sleigh-pulling herd. A sympathetic neighbour steps in to help. “Prancer” is available on iTunes, Vudu and Hulu.
‘We’re No Angels’ (1955)
Humphrey Bogart and director Michael Curtiz teamed up for the 1955 comedy film, where Bogie plays an escaped convict. He and his criminal pals (Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray) decide to help a shopkeeper over the holidays because they believe he is worse off even than they are. The film is streamed on Amazon, iTunes and Vudu. According to the trailer, you will “laugh like the devil.”
'White Christmas' (1954)
This classic, song and dance film stars Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, playing characters who have teamed up after the war to be the new, hottest act in show business. One winter, the pair joins forces with Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen’s characters as a sister act. They all trek together to Vermont to enjoy a White Christmas.
