I am comparing the two newest ones of the franchise, the 2018 film, and the 2015 video game. I will mainly focus on the two trailers since the film has not come out yet, but the game is available to play on Steam and Xbox One. This franchise has been going on for years since the 1990's starting with the Video Games in 1996. Then in 2001 came the Tomb Raider film starring Angelina Jolie. To this day they continue making both the game and the films. Now we have a new Lara Croft played by actress Alicia Vikander for the 2018 film that is strikingly similar to the game "Rise of the Tomb Raider."
'Rise of the Tomb Raider' game trailer review
This is a trailer for the "Rise of the Tomb Raider" video game that was released in 2015.
The evolution of the "Tomb Raider" games is remarkable. From the 1990's to 2015, the difference is compelling, but it still is exciting and adventurous for all of the games. From solving puzzles to avoiding traps the player is always staring at death. This trailer has a similar plot to the new film. The backstory of her father, her origin life in London, and Trinity. Trinity was said in both the game and film trailer and is the core of each premise. They are the obvious threat to both the game and film and you will have to play or watch to find out more.
This trailer also involves Lara's famous ice pix, her temple running, exaggerated leaping, and her bow. The trailer also features many gorgeous gameplay shots and landscapes in the game, that we can see in the film as well.
Also similar to the film trailer the beat of this trailer connects with the song. Each cut and explosion is utilized to the beat of the song. The lyrics in the song as well relate to the title and theme of the game itself; "I will rise, I will rise, again and again." If your a 'Tomb Raider' fan this game will not disappoint.
'Tomb Raider 2012' game trailer
This is the "Tomb Raider" game trailer for the 2012 game, which also has many similarities to the film.
This trailer resembles a lot of the action shots and Lara herself to the film. Lara is wearing a very similar outfit to the one in the film. The blue tank top, tan jungle pants, and combat boots.
As well as her brown hair is always in a ponytail, throughout all of the games. There isn't a clear sense as to why she is on a ship or where she is heading too, but the storm leads to Lara becoming who she is now. "Adventure found me"- Lara Croft, was the line that stuck with me from the trailer because it made me think that this is the origin story. About her first tomb raiding and surviving on a mysterious island.
A lot of the shots on the ship are almost identical to the shots in the film trailer from the ship scene. Her giant leap into the air during the storm, falling into the water and washing up on land. The last shot of the trailer is all we are left with. A wounded Lara covered in mud and blood, with her bow and ice pix, which we can see as well in the film trailer.
I noticed that there is no gameplay in this trailer, leaving the player with wonder and excitement for the game.
'Tomb Raider' film trailer review
This is the "Tomb Raider" 2018 film extended trailer that will be released on March 16, 2018.
This is an exciting trailer. Its an overall well put together trailer that should have Croft fans raging. This film trailer is a mix of similarities of the "Tomb Raider 2012" game trailer and "Rise of the Tomb Raider 2015." The biggest note I took was from the start of it was there is a beat to the trailer. The cuts and shots line up to the guitar beat playing, but that beat builds suspense and excitement. We get some backstory about Lara and her father's relationship which is extremely similar in the game "Rise of the Tomb Raider." The first couple of shots showcase Lara's ability to solve puzzles.
Which in hindsight you do in the game as well. You are solving puzzles like Lara versus watching Lara solve them.
The trailer hints at some of the explosions and fun we can expect to see in the film. Then we understand that she is on a search for her father. She is on a boat sailing to where she thinks he is. Similar to the game trailer we have shots of maps, Lara stating she has an idea of where he is, and then a storm destroys the ship. Now, this was a scene in the 2012 game trailer before "Rise of the Tomb Raider." Both trailers posses this scene where Lara is on a ship during a storm and has to survive. We see shots of her over a river and falling in, which is part of the gameplay in the 2012 game.
It cuts to her using her ice pix as a weapon which is used in both games and very iconic. To me, that is interesting because I believe that the film is following closer to the newest 'Tomb Raider' games, whereas the Angelina Jolie films followed the older games.
The trailer continues showing epic shots of avoiding temple traps, exaggerated leaping, fight scenes, and the epic plane jump on a waterfall. Which is also in the gameplay of the 2012 game. We also see shots of her famous bow and arrow set up, which used heavily throughout gameplay and is the iconic image in the title sequence of the film.
As we can see, there are many similarities between the three trailers. Everything from a similar plot, ship shots, outfit, and weapons.
This film will cater to many "Tomb Raider" fans no doubt. I am excited to see the film when it comes out which is March 16, 2018. If you have not played any of the games, they are on sale right now on Steam, and they are a lot of fun. You get to play as Lara and guide her through her adventures. These are my top ten games to play, and many fans will agree with me. So you have time to play the games before the film comes out, or you can re-watch the Angelina Jolie films and compare them to the new one.
