In May 2014, the country turned their attention to Waukesha, Wisconsin and what became known as the Slender Man stabbing. CBS reports that both Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser were sentenced in the case. Since the sentencing was handed down, not much has been heard about either participant. However, it was recently announced that Geyser is attempting to appeal her sentence.

Bustle reports that Weier and Geyser pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder of their friend 12-year-old Payton Leutner. Law enforcement reported that Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times.

Both girls were 12 at the time and during interviews with police, said they did it for the fictional character Slender Man, which they believed was real.

The pair of teens were found not guilty by reason of mental disease

The two girls received their sentence in 2017 but were found not guilty by reason of mental disease. Weier ended up with a 25-year sentence at an institutional facility, while Geyser received a 40-year sentence at a mental health facility as well. Fox 6 reports that both girls were serving their time at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, but psych experts testified that Geyser should be relocated to a facility that can treat her schizophrenia.

Geyser was 15 when she received her 40-year sentence and now has started the appeal process.

Geyser ended up being tried as an adult, but her legal team claims she should have been charged in youth court because Geyser believed Slender Man was going to hurt her family if she didn't try to kill her friend. She also told police she didn't understand her rights. Its possible Geyser would only have been sentenced to three years at a mental health facility as well as supervision until she was 18.

The state has until February 4, 2019, to respond to the appeal.

Victim's family speak out about daughter's constant suffering

The victim's family has spoken out about the attack and how it's scarred their daughter for life. Stacie Leutner sent a letter to the judge overseeing the case, saying that her daughter still struggles with the events of that day, which have left her changed.

Leutner now sleeps with scissors under her pillow and always locks her windows at night. The family has not commented on the appeal.

World Screen reports the news of the appeal comes just before the release of the Reelz documentary "Slender Man Stabbing: The Untold Story." Nobody has mentioned what will happen with Geyser moving forward, but the documentary is sure to bring new attention to the case and the event surrounding the stabbing.
