The 21-year-old rapper, known as Lil Peep, died Wednesday night (Nov. 15) in Tucson. Reports say that the death is due to an overdose of fake Xanax laced with fentanyl. He was on tour the night of his death. People with him at the time believed that he was sleeping in between shows on the tour bus. After he was found not breathing, Lil Peep was rushed to the hospital, music manager Adam Grandmaison told reporters. Many loved ones in his personal life and rap career expressed deep sorrow for the rapper's untimely death. A report by Variety provided most of the details for this article.
Who is Lil Peep?
Lil Peep is a rapper from Long Island. Born, Gustav Ahr, he began rapping shortly after dropping out of high school. His first project didn't receive much attention and it seemed he would stay at the local rapper level. However, he released two more projects, Crybaby and Hellboy, that received a mainstream appeal. He focused on relatable topics such as depression, mental illnesses, and drug addictions that amassed a large fan base.
Lil Peep is considered the rapper who blended hip-hop with emo. His music is influenced by rock bands such as BLINK-182 through references, samples, and style imitations. Then, he implements his own style of rap to create this new genre of rap. Lil Peep received attention from media outlets such as No Jumper, Fader, and Complex due to his unique style and personality.
With this new fame, he announced his debut album, Come Over When You're Sober. In addition, he began touring in order to promote the album. The tour began August 2 and was scheduled to end November 17.
Reactions to Lil Peep's death
Those who knew Lil Peep knew that he was struggling with depression. Drugs were his temporary escape and it saddens everyone that his temporary escape resulted in his eventual death.
Peep's manager, Chase Ortega, knew that Peep's addiction was spiraling to the point that Ortega tweeted on a private twitter account, "I've been expecting this call for a year. Mother f---". The CEO of First Access Entertainment, a partner of Lil Peep, Sarah Stenette, said she was heartbroken to hear about his death and she felt hat Lil Peep did not die but was crying out for help.
She elaborated that he had the potential to complete his goals and his ambitions were great.
Many celebrities were devastated by this tragedy. Former romantic interest Bella Thorne, friends, and people who've performed with him such as Post Malone, Lil Yachty, Marshmello, and celebrities who respected his impact such as Lil B the Based God, all expressed their condolences on social media. There is no doubt that his fans will miss him. Lil Peep is another example of the drug culture where people are losing their lives and the culture where mental health is ignored. Hopefully, his death will push forth a change that America needs.
