Donald Trump spent part of his day on Monday at the White House presenting the Medal of Honor to a Vietnam War veteran. As this was taking place, critics of the president took time to give their thoughts on social media.
Trump and Vietnam
When Donald Trump first announced his plan to run for president, he did so with a few talking points in mind. One talking point Trump focused on was his love of the military and veterans, while vowing to be the greatest president for those who serve for the United States. During the 2016 presidential campaign, the former host of "The Apprentice" often spoke out about veterans and the military while on the campaign trail, but did receive heavy backlash for his comments about Sen.
John McCain. When asked about McCain's service in the Vietnam War where he became a POW, Trump replied that the senator was "not a war hero," stating, "I like people who weren't captured." As expected, many hit back against Trump, with some pointing to the fact that he received five deferments to avoid having to serve in the military during the war in Vietnam. Fast forward to this week where McCain took a jab at Trump, ridiculing those who seek medical deferments to avoid service. As reported by NBC News on October 23, Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to a veteran of Vietnam.

On Monday afternoon, Donald Trump welcomed Vietnam War veteran Army Captain Gary Rose to the White House to accept his Medal of Honor.
Rose served as an Army medic during the war in the 5th Special Forces Group. In addition to his Medal of Honor, Rose has received a Purple Heart after getting shot during the last day of his mission. Rose's service in the Army spanned over 20 years, and has finally received recognition.
Twitter reacts
While Donald Trump honored Gary Rose with the Medal of Honor, critics were not impressed with the president due to his history of avoiding service.
"Mr Bone Spur. I would hold out for a legitimate president," one tweet read.

"The timing of this could not be any worse!" yet another tweet stated. "We the people of the United States of America award Trump the medal of dishonorable corrupt illegitimate president in history of US Impeach45," a post read. The backlash continued as it was more than clear that many Americans weren't impressed with Donald Trump in regards to his lack of time in the military.
