Former US Vice President Al Gore says Trump’s action of withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate pact was careless and irresponsible, but that Americans will lead the campaign against climate change without him. According to the former Vice President, Trump took the wrong decision in the view of majority of Americans. Majority of the people in each of the 50 US states wanted to remain in the accord. Most of supporters of President Trump wanted to remain in. Almost 70 percent of the American population is in support of the Paris climate deal.
Hence, it was a reckless action, Al Gore said.
Future of US leadership role
Gore further stated that President Trump’s decision was indefensible and that it undermines US leadership role in the world. “It threatens humanity’s ability to confront global warming in time,” he said.
On several occasions, Trump has described climate change as a hoax. He announced that his administration will begin the process of withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate accord, which was endorsed by 195 member nations in 2015 in Paris, during the United Nations Framework convention on Climate Change.
Trump said in a speech at the White House that he was elected as a representative of Pittsburgh and not Paris, when he announced his decision to exit from the climate deal.
Americans to provide leadership
Al Gore said Trump’s decision is terrible and that Americans will need to move forward in the aftermath of the decision, and that the good side of it is that Americans will provide leadership regardless if president Trump provide it or not. Should the US exit, it will join Syria and Nicaragua as the only two nations not involved in the climate pact.
US interest
It is not in the interest of the US to be isolated from the rest of the world,” Al Gore said. India has announce that 100 percent of the cars manufactured in that country will be electric vehicles in 13 years, while China has reduced its greenhouse emissions four years in rows. We are witnessing an aggressive move to solar and wind energy.
And the United States are supposed to be in leadership in this direction,”
Trump said he will start a renegotiation move on climate change with other nations to try and broker a new deal that he feels will be fair.
Gore has won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his activism in global warming. He had met with Trump at his at Trump Tower during the transition period to convince him to stay in the Paris Pact.
