The annual White House Easter Egg Roll was an easy Twitter target for President Trump. He used his more official handle - @POTUS - to relay his favor with this tradition. In fact, within the past couple of days, through @POTUS, Trump also shared his congratulations to a new member of the NYPD, tweeted a live feed of his weekly presidential address, and retweeted the First Lady's original Easter egg roll tweet.
With the Trump administration, Twitter reigns
@POTUS isn't the President's only handle. @WhiteHouse is another formal social media path used by the President through the White House staff.
Recent tweets include some of the very same (in fact identical) tweets from @POTUS plus more. The @WhiteHouse handle shares dozens of live feed links, press conference information, congratulatory statements (think Supreme Court confirmation tweets), travel news regarding the comings and going of both the POTUS, VPOTUS, and others, and daily schedule links and documents.
In all, between @POTUS and @WhiteHouse, Twitter activity is a full-time, fully engaged sport for those manning the social media ship for these two handles.
And then there is @realDonaldTrump
The third Trump Twitter handle is by far the more interesting and revealing of all social media used throughout the Trump administration. The @realDonaldTrump handle is seemingly maintained -- according to the POTUS -- by the POTUS.
The @POTUS and @WhiteHouse handles have an air of being guided and fed by individuals other than the President himself.
However, with the current United States President, the public is able to enter Trump's actual social media stream unfettered and uncensored by anyone -- again, so it seems. Recent tweets sent followers to the Drudge Report, commented on fake news media, offered book/reading suggestions, discussed the first 90 days of the presidency, and editorialized the elections in Kansas.
Rarely have ordinary mainstream citizens had the opportunity to enter the daily wonderings and wanderings of a sitting president. Regardless of political stance, the comprehensive use of Twitter by the POTUS brings new character and flavor to the way daily news and opinions are shared.
Trump's effective use of social media has forever changed the way government at the highest level reaches a listening audience.
Love it or hate it, social media has changed what and how we know what we know.
