Students in the United States appear to be unnerved at the growing incidents of gun violence in schools, and the hesitation on the part of the administration to enforce strict Gun Control measures. That is what prompted the survivors of the Parkland school in Florida to meet students of other schools. They want to have a joint demonstration to highlight the issue.
According to Chicago Sun-Times, the students plan to have Chicago’s March for Our Lives on March 24 from Union Park. More than 30,000 people are expected to participate. This will not be an isolated one because there will be many more such marches to bring home the point to those who matter.
Students demand firm action
The Parkland school shooting in Florida that killed 17 persons was one more incident of gun violence. The gunman walked into the school and fired indiscriminately to leave a trail of blood and death. It has traumatized the staff and students, and they want a stricter gun control to ensure that there is no recurrence of such attacks. Students have revealed that Chicago has witnessed more than 2,700 shootings last year. Former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has said that elected officials have to guarantee safety to the students in schools. They should not have to live in fear of falling prey to another trigger-happy gunman.
The administration must act
Fox News reports that after the Parkland school shooting in Florida, several options on gun control measures have emerged.
Action has already been taken to ban bump stocks. Soon after the Parkland shooting, President Donald Trump has signed an order to ban these items that can convert a semi-automatic rifle into a fully automatic one. Another action on the anvil is to arm a section of the staff to tackle the gunman. It would be in the form of a school safety bill that would have a provision to arm up to 10 school personnel.
They will act as a deterrent and will take care of situations that may arise. It seems a couple of schools in Ohio already have such a system. The identity of these persons are kept a secret and they have access to locations where the weapons are concealed.
Other options include strengthening the background check process before buying a gun, imposing a ban on high capacity weapons, and increasing the minimum age for purchasing a semi-automatic weapon to 21. The background check is important because those who commit such heinous crimes are usually of unsound mind. It this is detected in advance, it can save many innocent lives.
