German automobile maker Volkswagen officially announced that it is bringing back its iconic Hippie microbus, but this time, it will be a vehicle that is run by electricity. Cars, such as the upcoming microbuses that are running on electric motors are said to be more organic and eco-friendly.

Volkswagen recently held an event where it announced the release of the iconic hippie bus, which is set in 2022. The company called the concept car as “I.D. Buzz,” and was shown to a selected number of audience in Geneva and Detroit.

The new I.D. Buzz microbus by the car company has been a classic hippie vehicle famous around California surfing circles and communities.

The announcement was made during the weekend at the prestigious Concours d’Elegance held Pebble Beach, California.

The upcoming I.D. Buzz will be used as an electric delivery van, with improved automated driving features. It will be launched in various dealership outlets around North America, China, and Europe after the arrival of the four-door version, according to a report on Futurism.

Multi-purpose van

According to Futurism, the new Volkswagen electric hippie van will serve various purposes, such as taking passengers around places and carrying freight. There will another version to be released called the “I.D. Buzz Cargo,” which was designed for delivering cargo while driving the car with zero emissions.

It will reportedly be ideal for bringing packages of goods to inner cities, Volkswagen officials said in the official press release. CEO Dr. Herbert Diess spoke during the event saying that several customers requested for this car to be manufactured.

The car has a wide interior space and a long wheelbase, Futurism added. A CNET review revealed that the doors automatically open and close.

The I.D. Buzz also has a speed that can match other models of eco-friendly vehicles released by other companies. Moreover, the battery pack was reviewed to have a range of more than 250 miles.

First produced in 1950

The article also revealed that this Volkswagen microbus had been part of America’s history. It was first produced in the 1950s, and the decade after, it became the symbol of pop culture.

They were seen in many forms of media ever since.
