The Volkswagen Group announced that it will bring back the classic Microbus, yet this time it will be empowered by electric energy. This electric car referred to as Volkswagen I.D. Buzz was conceptualized earlier this year 2017 and it will materialize by 2022.

The announcement was held last Saturday at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California in the United States. The iconic Microbus has been mostly used by California hippies and surfers.

Herbert Diess, the Volkswagen CEO, who traveled from Germany, said that after they had the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, they have received numerous letters and emails from customers to build this new VW Electric car.

Meanwhile, Hinrich J. Woebcken, the VW’s North American CEO, dubbed the I.D. Buzz as the perfect balance between usability, emotion, and sustainability that displays their technological leadership. He further said that the customers like the high seating position, cargo capacity, the overall versatility and all-wheel drive of this VW. He added that it’s suitable for the zero-emissions for the American lifestyle, as noted by Forbes.

Volkswagen I.D. Buzz features

The new I.D. Buzz model will speed up to 300 miles of range per charge. It has an ability to intensify up to 80 percent of its energy capacity in 30 minutes utilizing the company’s fast-charging system. It also has 369 hp on every axle for additional handling ability.

Mashable reports that the Volkswagen aims to launch a self-driving system known as I.D. Pilot by 2025. Meanwhile, the I.D. Buzz will be semi-autonomous, which is able of Level 3 self-driving. This electric VW car could manage some of the driving tasks. On the other hand, there is still a need for a human driver.

The interior of the I.D.

Buzz is spacious. There will be enough rooms for passengers and even for cargo. Its batteries will be framed under the floor’s vehicle. This creates more interior space making it more comfortable and airy for the passengers and roomy for storage. Another of its feature is the specialized Cargo variant that is for hauling and delivering goods.

The first prototype

The first Volkswagen I.D. Buzz minivan was first shown as a prototype at the 2017 North American International Auto Show. It is one of the five new Volkswagen brand models based on the new all-electric MEB platform. This classic hippie vibe is now in production and will be released in 2022.
