"God of War" was released last month on April 20 and has proved to be yet another massive hit for Sony's PlayStation 4 console. The PS4 exclusive has certainly had a great deal of hype behind it in the build-up to its release but, unlike some games, managed to live up to the lofty expectations. It has become a must buy game for PlayStation gamers. The game received critical acclaim upon its release and, based on the fact it's now been in the No. 1 spot in the UK game charts since its debut, it seems to also be enjoying very strong sales.

The game charts

"God of War" went straight to the top of the UK game charts upon its release and has remained there ever since. This is despite fierce competition from other big games such as the release of "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze," which has made its debut in second. "Far Cry 5" spent some time at No. 1 upon its release but now sits in third place. "FIFA 18" continues to enjoy strong sales since its release in September of last year and is in fourth place. "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" continues to show the popularity of the Switch by bringing up the rear in fifth. No doubt Nintendo was hoping the newly released "Donkey Kong" would manage to take "God of War's" place as king of the charts but it seems Kratos just can't be moved according to Chart Track.

Critical acclaim

"God of War" is one of PlayStation's most beloved franchises and has had a loyal fanbase ever since it made its debut on the PS2. We saw follow up games get released on the PSP and PS3 but it had been several years since we'd last seen Kratos when the new "God of War" was announced. Fans were thrilled to see Kratos return, along with a new Norse setting, and there were very high expectations for the game.

Luckily, "God of War" more than lived up to the hype and received incredibly strong reviews from critics everywhere, with many awarding it perfect scores. The return of a beloved franchise, along with such glowing reviews, has no doubt prompted many gamers to pick up a copy.

A month on top?

This coming week doesn't see the release of any particularly high profile games, perhaps with the exception of the release of "Conan Exiles" on the Xbox One and PS4.

Will Conan be strong enough to take the top spot from Kratos, or will Kratos cast him down along with all the other powerful enemies he's defeated? It's also worth noting that "Detroit: Become Human," another anticipated PlayStation exclusive is set to release later this month. Could it be that only another PS4 exclusive can topple Kratos? Only time will tell if "God of War" is able to enjoy an entire month atop the charts, but it certainly seems possible.
