Everyone's favorite purple dragon returns this year with the release of the "Spyro Reignited Trilogy." The first three games are being Remastered, so fans of the platform series will get a chance to replay "Spyro: the Dragon," "Ripto's Rage," and "Year of the Dragon" with updated graphics and all-new features. The game is set to release on September 21. Reports by Polygon and IGN provided information used in this article.

'Spyro Reignited' will be available for Playstation 4 and Xbox One

Fans are able to pre-order the game before the release date for $40.

The original trilogy was developed for PlayStation 1 by Insomniac Games, which is currently working on a new "Spider-Man" game for PS4. The remaster is being developed by Toys For Bob, which also developed the spin-off series "Skylanders" for Activision.

Activision brought us the "Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy" last year, and the reboot won IGN's Best Remake/Remaster award. Given that success, it's no surprise that Activision, the publisher for both the "Crash" and "Spyro" franchises, would plan to bring back another hit series for nostalgic fans. It's an opportunity for people who may no longer have the original games or console to relive a magical part of their childhoods.

The 'Spyro' remaster will consist of 100 levels throughout the games

Activision says that the reboot has been completely reconstructed, so the three games will not identically mimic the originals. However, gameplay stills reveal the familiar portals that transport Spyro to different worlds within the Dragon Realms. Boss battles and egg thieves also appear to be making a return as indicated in the recent trailer.

The "Reignited Trilogy" is the first independent "Spyro" game since "Dawn of the Dragon." Following the last installment, the focus was shifted to the "Skylanders" series, which made its debut in 2011. The spin-off primarily features Spyro but provides a wide range of other playable characters with different elements including Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Magic, Life, Undead, Dark, and Light.

Water is also an additional element Spyro can use in "Spyro: a Hero's Tail."

"Skylanders" is a more battle-centric game that uses a "Portal of Power" to upload characters into the game from coded toys. The series has earned positive reception and in 2015 the first season of the "Skylanders" TV show premiered on Netflix. The second season aired in October 2017.

Though Spyro is a playable character in various forms in the "Skylanders" series, fans are excited to return to where it all began.
