As a world-renowned singer, actress, and fragrance designer, Britney Spears has long established herself as a multi-talented entertainer. Spears arrived on the scene in 1992 when she was cast alongside Justin Timberlake in "The All-New Mickey Mouse Club." At seventeen, she released her best-selling album "...Baby One More Time." Having wrapped up her four-year residency in Las Vegas this past December, Britney is moving onto new, inspiring projects.
Selection of Spears' hit singles may find their way to Broadway
Spears is in talks about collaborating with Jerry Mitchell, who has won two Tony Awards for his choreography work.
From November 2015 to August 2017, Mitchell directed "On Your Feet!" which is inspired by the music of Gloria and Emilio Estefan. The autobiographical show received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Tony Award as well.
Though the plot has not been officially confirmed, Mitchell has indicated that a show featuring Spears' music would not reflect the events of her life. Rather, the show would follow in the footsteps of "Mamma Mia!," which pieces a selection of ABBA's singles together to connect an overarching story. Spears' managers, Larry Rudolph and Adam Leber, have reportedly begun discussing possible routes to take with Mitchell.
In the meantime, Spears prepares for her upcoming 'Piece of Me' tour
Britney announced, in January via Instagram, that she would be taking the "Piece of Me" show on the road. The performance was well-received, during Spears' residency at Planet Hollywood, having won the Best of Las Vegas title in both 2015 and 2017. The tour will head to various cities in the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom with the first show scheduled for July 12 in Washington D.C.
Fans are snagging tickets as fast as they can and 15 out of 31 total performances are already sold out. Spears will remain an extra day or two in select cities including New York, Atlantic City, London, Paris, and Hollywood, FL for multiple performances.
With a jam-packed summer full of traveling, rehearsing, and performing for thousands of fans, Spears' level of involvement with the potential Broadway project is uncertain.
Though fans would love to see Britney play a role on the stage, the project still has no outline or sequence of development. Whether or not Spears will take on a character role or partake in writing the script is unconfirmed.
