One of the biggest things you can share is that you are having a baby. For many, this is the best time, as it isn't always easy to have a baby. You may have been planning this pregnancy for a long time, and you may already know what the nursery is going to look like, but there are many hurdles ahead when it comes to having a baby. One of these hurdles is sharing the news, as you want to do it in a memorable way, but also a fun way.

If you are looking for a big surprise moment, then consider creating gender reveal cakes when you share the news. There's a moment of anticipation, the big surprise and then probably a few "awe" afterward.

If you are planning to do everything yourself, here are two fairly straight forward options for the gender reveal cake.

Uncover the inside

One of the more popular options, when you want to reveal whether you are having a boy or a girl, is to create a cake, where the gender is revealed when you cut the cake. The idea is to create a center filling that spills out when you Cut The Cake, so your friends and family know whether it is a boy or a girl in your tummy. While it may look complicated to do, it's actually rather simple.

Bake a cake that is tall enough to contain a filling in the middle. You want the cake to be at least 5 inches tall so that you can hide the center. The filling could be a buttercream, but you can also include Smarties or even jelly beans.

It's important to note that you won't be baking the center filling, so you can add whatever you please.

Once the cake is done baking, let it cool. When it has cooled down, cut the cake into three equal sizes on the horizontal angle. Place the bottom piece on your cake display. Spread this layer with buttercream, as this will act as glue to hold the layers of the cake together.

In the middle layer of the cake, make a hole that's about half the circumference of the cake. Add the layer with the hole on top of the bottom layer. You can now add your filling, whether you are doing candy pieces or a colorful buttercream. Finally, add another layer of buttercream and place the last cake piece on top to seal the filling inside.

Decorate with a neutral colored buttercream, so your guests have no idea what the color inside is.

Cut the cupcake

Another idea is to go with cupcakes. You can follow the same example as above by carving out a hole in the baked cupcake. You carve the hole from the top of the cupcake and fill it with pink or blue buttercream. You then add neutral-colored buttercream to the top of the cupcake to hide the color inside, such as a vanilla white or a brown caramel. When the cupcake is cut, the gender is revealed.
