With the NBA regular season ready to begin on October 22, let’s take a look at 10 veterans who could potentially become an All-Star for the first time this season.
These players have all spent at least five seasons in the NBA (Someone like Devin Booker has played four, so he is not listed here). Last year’s All-Star Game had two veterans in Khris Middleton and Nikola Vucevic, who were named All-Stars for the first time.
Eric Bledsoe, Bucks
While his struggles in the postseason were well-documented, Bledsoe played an integral role on a team that had the best regular season record in 2018-19. He was also named to the All-Defensive First Team last season.
Mike Conley, Jazz
Amazingly, Conley does not have an All-Star appearance in his 12 NBA seasons. That could change if the floor general has Utah at or near the top of the West at the All-Star break.
Danilo Gallinari, Thunder
Health has always been an issue for Gallinari, but if he remains on the floor and Oklahoma City surprisingly stays in playoff contention, he could be in the hunt for an All-Star roster spot.
Rudy Gobert, Jazz
Despite being the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year and twice being named an All-NBA member, Gobert has never been an All-Star.
Aaron Gordon, Magic
Fans of the Magic have been waiting for Gordon to take that next step in becoming an All-Star level player. Over the last two seasons, he has averaged 16.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists.
Tobias Harris, 76ers
You would think a player that signed a five-year, $180 million deal in the offseason to remain with Philadelphia would be a perennial All-Star. Harris has not been one yet, but he averaged career-highs across the board last season in scoring (20.0), rebounding (7.9), and assists (2.8).
Zach LaVine, Bulls
While he hasn’t shown much on the defensive end, there are times when LaVine can score at will. His 23.7 scoring average in 2018-19 was good for 16th-best in the league.
CJ McCollum, Trail Blazers
It has now been four straight seasons in which McCollum has averaged 20+ points, and Portland is coming off a season in which they reached the Western Conference Finals. Plus he shouldn’t miss too many games (unless an injury occurs) as Yahoo reported that he and Damian Lillard don’t plan to use load management this season.
Julius Randle, Knicks
Randle averaged a career-best 21.4 points last season, and he could be in line for more touches on the offensive end for a young Knicks team. The New York Post recently talked about how he wants to become more of a leader this season.
Lou Williams, Clippers
Williams has been named Sixth Man each of the last two seasons and three of the last five. Despite getting ready for his 15th NBA season, his two highest scoring averages have come in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
