The Nebraska football team opens its 2019 season against the South Alabama Jaguars as a 35-point favorite. While the Huskers are expected to win going away, there are some players the team is going to need to keep tabs on. Should they manage to keep these guys in check, the contest could get out of hand quickly.
Cephus Johnson - QB
Johnson was the third string quarterback a year ago as a freshman but he's the man to start the year in 2019. He attempted just 19 passes (completing seven of them) for 120 yards, three touchdowns and one pick. It's hard to know exactly how good a passer he is, but considering he ran for over 100 yards in limited action, it's clear he's willing to pull it down and carry the ball.
Tyree Turner - DE
Turner was a headache for opposing offenses a year ago. He led South Alabama in sacks (four) and tackles for loss (10). He also amassed 51 total tackles. A mostly untested offensive line with a couple of new starters could have its hands full with Turner, especially early on.
Kawaan Baker - WR
Baker is leading returning receiver with 33 catches for 494 yards and four touchdowns a year ago. What makes Baker a real threat is, South Alabama isn't afraid to let him run the ball. He was actually the second leading rusher for the Jags last season, rushing for 250 yards. He led the team in rushing touchdowns with nine.
Tra Minter - RB
It should be a given that South Alabama's rushing game wasn't great when a receiver is the second leading ball carrier. Still, Tra Minter returns after running for over 800 yards a year ago. He's also the leading punt returner and he did take one punt 75 yards for a touchdown in 2018.
Jalen Thompson - CB
if South Alabama doesn't want to be down 28-0 in the first quarter, they're going to need to defend the pass effectively. If they're going to do that, it will likely be thanks to Jalen Thompson. He led the team in interceptions last year with four and took one to the house. He's likely going to be tasked with covering JD Spielman for most of the game.
