In the Eastern Conference, only two teams that remain out of the playoff race, the Sabers and Hurricanes, have a realistic shot at playoff contention. Other teams that are out of the playoff race have been hovering in the bottom of the standings for the majority of the season and have an extremely slim chance of rising up in the standings. Here are some players those teams could trade for future pieces.
Mark Stone
Stone is having a great season on the last place Senators. He has already tied is career-high in goals with 26 and has 31 assists to go along with that. He has 57 points in as many games played and the Senators are expecting three pieces in return with one of them being a first round pick. Stone has been linked to the Jets.
Matt Duchene
A year after being traded away from the Avalanche because he wanted to play on a playoff team, it turned out to be the worse for him as the Avalanche ended up making the playoffs and the Senators didn't. Duchene has 26 goals and 28 assists which brings him to 54 points in 48 games. Like Stone, the Senators are expecting three pieces for Duchene with one of them being a first round pick but the Senators may also try to extend him. The Jets have been rumored to be interested in Duchene as well.
Ryan Dzingel
Dzingel has been a nice surprise this season as he has 21 goals and 20 assists. Dzingel is a free agent at the end of the season.
Dylan DeMelo
One of the pieces the Senators received from the Sharks in the Karlsson trade, DeMelo has posted 14 points with an astonishing +/- rating of +17. He has also taken 76 shots on net.
Craig Anderson
Anderson is still under contract for one more season after this but at the age of 37, the Senators should try and move him. Anderson's record in the 2018-19 season is 14-17-3 and has a 3.55 GAA with a save percentage of .904.
Kyle Palmieri
After surprisingly making the playoffs, last season, the Devils have found themselves in the basement but that hasn't stopped Palmieri from producing at a high level. Palmieri is at 25 goals and 19 assists.
Marcus Johansson
Johansson has always been an excellent depth player in his career and he's showed just that, this season, by posting 11 goals and 14 assists. He also has 10 points in his last 11 games and would be a good option as a bottom six forward on a contending team.
Keith Kinkaid
With the emergence of Blackwood, the fact that Kinkaid is a free agent after this season and that Schneider is going nowhere with his bloated contract, the Devils should explore the market for Kinkaid as he would be an excellent backup option. Kinkaid is 15-17-6 with a 3.34 GAA and a .892 save percentage.
Gustav Nyquist
Nyquist is up to 14 goals and 33 assists this season with 147 shots on net. Nyquist could possibly be a top six forward depending on the team he gets traded to.
Thomas Vanek
Vanek has 11 goals and 17 assists this season but if any contender acquires him, it will be for the purpose of veteran presence.
Mike Green
Many people expected Green to be dealt last season when he was slated to become a free agent after last season was over by the Red Wings kept him and re-signed him to a two year contract. With one year remaining on his contract after this year, the Red Wings may look to try and trade him now so they can get more in return.
Jimmy Howard
With Howard's contract expiring at the conclusion of this season, the Red Wings will try and trade him and there should be plenty of suitors for Howard but he would most likely be a backup on a contending team. Howard has a 17-15-5 record with a GAA of 2.74 and a .915 save percentage.
Derick Brassard
Brassard, who was just recently acquired by the Panthers from the Penguins, may find himself on the move again as the Panthers have a slim chance of making the playoffs. Brassard would be a good third or fourth line center on a contender.
Mats Zuccarello
Zuccarello would be a great addition to any contender. Zuccarello is at nine goals and 26 assists this season.
Kevin Hayes
Hayes is having a great season as he's posted 13 goals with 27 helpers. Hayes is a free agent at seasons end.
Wayne Simmonds
The Flyers have decided that they will either try and extend Simmonds or trade him with the second option looking more likely. Simmonds has struggled this season with 16 goals and nine assists but would still be a welcoming addition to any contending team.
Artemi Panarin
The Blue Jackets are currently in a playoff spot but the Blue Jackets don't want Panarin to walk without getting anything in return. Panarin has 64 points and has been linked to the Bruins.
Sergei Bobrovsky
Like Panarin, the Blue Jackets don't want Bobrovsky to walk without getting anything in return. Bobrovsky is 23-17-1 with a GAA of .290 and a save percentage of .903.
