With spring training in full gear, it is time to start thinking about the boys of summer! Many experts believe that the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs will be playoff contenders once again this season. However, that isn’t really going out on a limb, is it? Now, predicting the under the radar teams that could have a great 2019? That’s a challenge!
New York Mets
The addition of Robinson Cano is big. However, it will be players like Michael Conforto and Yoenis Cespedes that could make the difference in 2019. When you have Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom leading the way on the mound, the sky is the limit this season; if this team stays healthy.
San Diego Padres
Yes, adding Manny Machado is huge, but also adding a solid player like Ian Kinsler to a lineup that includes Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers provides a new uprising in the West.
Cincinnati Reds
The Reds had an okay lineup in 2018, but adding Yasiel Puig will definitely give them a boost. They also acquired Sonny Gray from the Yankees. The Reds are hoping that a change of scenery for Gray will get him back to his old form.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers were a beast just a few years ago. Nevertheless, they cleaned house and are in rebuild mode. They won 67 games in 2018 and were without a lot of key players, including Miguel Cabrera for 75 percent of the season. If they stay healthy, Detroit should win 80 or more in 2019.
Tampa Bay Rays
They were the biggest surprise in 2018, but can they do it again? They added Charlie Morton, Mike Zunino, and Avisail Garcia this offseason, which should only help the underdog Rays this season. Taking out the Red Sox and Yankees probably won’t happen, but the Rays will be pesky in 2019.
