The 2019 college football season is only seven months away, and it's never too early to speculate on a handful of topics, including Heisman Trophy candidates, as well as coaches who are entering next season on the hot seat. A few questionable coaches survived last season, and without delivering better results, could be kicked out of their respective programs. I feel that these are five head coaches entering the 2019 season under the most pressure and on the hot seat.
Willie Taggart - Florida State
Willie Taggart is entering his second season at Florida State, with serious questions about his future with FSU. The Seminoles ended up 5-7 last year. Taggart needs seven or eight wins and a bowl if he wants to keep his job. A disastrous season would bring Taggart's FSU career to an end.
Mike Bobo - Colorado State
Mike Bobo started his tenure at Colorado State with seven wins and a bowl appearance. However, they were 3-9 record last season, and had a five-game losing streak to end the season. Bobo signed an extension, putting him under contract through 2022. However, he could still be fired if he doesn't produce.
Troy Calhoun - Air Force
Troy Calhoun has been head coach at Air Force for 12 seasons. He has an 87-67 record and nine bowl appearances. His last two seasons have been without a bowl bid or winning record. Air Force improved its defense last year. Over seven seasons the Falcons ended up below .500 against FBS opponents. Calhoun has been able to bring Air Force back to a solid level of success. Another season below .500 could signal that a new leader is needed to lead the Falcons.
Lovie Smith - Illinois
The big name head coach at Illinois has not worked out. Lovie Smith and the Illini are 9-27 over three seasons. They are disappointing in a weak Big Ten West, with a 4-23 record.
Clay Helton - USC
Helton managed to keep his job, despite having the worst season for USC since 2000, going 5-7. USC hired Kliff Kingsbury as OC to strengthen Helton, but he ended up taking an NFL job. Helton's first two seasons brought a 21-6 record and a Rose Bowl win. Helton needs to secure a bowl bid to keep his job.
