The Detroit Lions have parted ways with offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. After a disappointing 2018 season, this comes as no surprise, especially considering that Cooter was not brought in by new head coach Matt Patricia. Who will replace Cooter as the new Lions OC? Here are five possibilities.
Adam Gase
The Michigan native is looking for a job after he was fired Monday by the Miami Dolphins. Gase worked in Detroit during the Mike Martz era. It is a long shot, but it would be a great hire for the Lions. Odds are Gase will be offered a few head coaching gigs - possibly with Arizona or Green Bay.
Charlie Weis
Like Patricia and Bob Quinn, Weis has many ties with the Patriots. Weis was with New England when the Patriots hired Matt Patricia -- and he wanted to take Patricia with him when he left the NFL for Notre Dame back in 2005. Can you say reunion?
Zac Taylor
Quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor is a red hot name right now around the NFL. Taylor is scheduled to interview for head coaching job when the Rams season is done, but taking the next step to coordinator before coaching makes sense. Taylor along with Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Shane Waldron are both on Patricia’s radar.
George Godsey
The current Lions quarterbacks coach has experience as an OC. Godsey was with the Texans in 2015-16 and he has prior ties to Matt Patricia in New England.
Freddie Kitchens
Kitchens is a long shot considering he is still employed by the Browns. However, with a new crew coming in, he may be available.
