Expanding streaming, diversity and duplicating MoviePass were all major topics in the entertainment industry in 2018, and insiders believe they'll continue to shape the conversation in 2019.

1

Streaming services continue to expand

Streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu continued to grow in the past year, spending billions of dollars on original content. Now Apple, Disney and WarnerMedia are working to launch their own streaming services.

2

Disney continues its domination at the box office

The domestic box office just recently hit the $11 billion mark. That's in part to Disney hits such as “Black Panther,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Incredibles 2,” which raked in over $700 million, $678 million and $608 million, respectively.

3

Movie theater subscriptions grow

2018 was rough year for MoviePass Inc, with its constant changing price model, customer service fiasco and financial woes. Insiders believe that the company might have a future in 2019 due to its latest pricing change. The service now allows users to see up to three movies per month for $9.95.

4

Diversity increases in Hollywood

Hollywood continues to call for an increase of diversity in their work. There has been a slow uptick in diversity in front and behind. Films such as "Black Panther" and "Wonder Woman" show that audiences want diverse content. Annenberg Inclusion Initiative offered up some changes to expand the diversity including adding five female speaking roles to scripts, promoting equity riders and supporting diverse films.

5

Production companies work to combat Disney's success

While Disney continues to bring in the money at the box office, rival production companies are looking for ways to catch up. Mid-range production companies can find value by buying intellectual properties that are on a "Star Wars" type level. These IPs can range from toys, to video games to books, all of which have been developed for film.
