When it came to Google searches in 2018, one had to rule the internet. For the past year, it was World Cup, as soccer mania took over the world and the world wide web. However, four other terms were also up there despite unfortunate circumstances leading to them.

1

World Cup is Google's top search

Soccer took over in 2018 with Russia hosting the latest FIFA World Cup tournament. The winning side was Team France with stars such as Paul Pogba and young sensation Kylian Mbappe on the roster. However, there were plenty of countries competing, leading to plenty of searches for several months.

2

Hurricane Florence

One of the devastating storms that hit in 2018 was No. 2 on the search list. The storm wreaked havoc on the Atlantic this past September, resulting in severe damage in parts of the Carolinas.

3

Mac Miller

The hip-hop star released his fifth studio album, "Swimming," in early August. Weeks later, social media and the internet were surprised by the sudden news of Mac Miller's death. The hip-hop star was just 26-years-old and left behind a catalog of music with fans left wanting more.

4

Kate Spade

Spade also passed away in 2018 and dominated internet searches as people searched for the latest updates. Spade was well-known for her stylish handbags and other products that she created. She was just 55-years-old.

5

Anthony Bourdain

Bourdain was a celebrity chef, author, and TV personality who also left the world sooner than expected. He was found dead in early June as a result of taking his own life at age 61.
