Interest in joining the Music Industry is likely sparked by artists like Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Cardi B and Justin Bieber. Before I present to you how to start a Music Career, I’ll like to present to you ten steps to write good music.
If you are a beginner, or a professional it’s very important to you, whether you’re interested in writing songs that you’ll pitch to TV shows, commercials, music publishers or you want to release them yourself as an artist.
How to write a good song in 7 steps
- Title first: Think short, summarize your song in your mind and create a phrase of around 6 to 10 words. In writing the title, you should try to make it as brief as possible. Some examples of brief titles in songs are: ‘Wrecking ball,’ ‘Roar,’ ‘Something light,’ and ‘What now.’
Also, another great way to make a memorable title is by making a statement. A good example of this is ‘Gotta be somebody’ by Nickel Bath.
- Make a list of some questions your music’s title suggests: Your music will pass on some specific information. Find them out and work with them. Get questions like what caused this? Why did this happen? What can be done about it?
- Choose a particular song structure. One of the most used song structures now is the Verse / Chorus / Verse / Chorus / Bridge / Chorus. Many other hit songs do something a bit different or similar; you can work with this or create yours.
- Try to find the melody in the lyrics. Choose and write down your favorite lines of the song.
- Start adding chords to the chorus melody. You can practice playing with the chords and melody until you find something you like. It’ll also be of a great help if you record the songs while playing them.
- Connect your choruses and verses. Do they make sense? If yes the next step is to get a friend or relation to listen to your new song.
- Build your bridge and the second verse. If your friend likes it, it then means your new song will be interesting. You can proceed to the studio to record your new song.

- Believe in yourself, hone your talents and also be conscious of the fact that there is a place for you in the music industry.
- Try to build a network with other musicians. Connect with as many individuals as possible, as relationships can drive your music career more than anything else.
- Also, you don’t really need to depend on record labels anymore. The internet is open to everybody to upload his/her songs and videos. You can post your new songs to Itunes, Youtube, and Soundcloud.
- Think of companies you can work with. Many business owners are working with music artists now. They want talented artists that will work as their brand ambassadors and also advertise their products through their music.
- As a new artist, be prepared to be versatile enough and adapt to many music genres until your brand is established.
