It would be good if people were angels to one another every chance they got. However, August 22 has been designated as National Be An Angel Day. Why is there such a day?
Random acts of kindness
This day was established by Jayne Howard Feldman in 1993. Its purpose is to encourage people to perform random Acts Of Kindness to help those in need. The primary goal of the day is to do something kind for those who do not expect it. It is more special if the act of kindness is bestowed on a stranger instead of on a friend or family member.
Feldman believes angels can be people without wings who were put on earth to help others.
Unfortunately, a lot of people put themselves before others and don't help when they can. She suggests that if you are an angel on August 22 every year, it could become a habit and you will be an angel on other days of the year as well.
Many opportunities
When Feldman decided to establish a day for earthly people to be angels, she included herself. She goes out of her way to help others as often as she can. She believes a person's random act of kindness doesn't have to be something big. It could be something as simple as giving a person your seat on a crowded bus. It could be paying for someone's lunch at a restaurant. It could be making a telephone call or sending a greeting card in the mail.
There are thousands of ways to make someone's day.
There are opportunities in a person's path all day long to be an angel. The thing to remember is that every act of generosity can make a difference in someone's life. The beauty of being an angel is that while you are being an angel to someone, someone else is waiting to be an angel to you.
That's the way it works, and Feldman knew that when she established National Be An Angel Day.
What the Bible says
There are many scriptures in the Bible about angels. According to Hebrews 13:2, people should show love toward strangers for they might be angels that we don't know about. The life application for that scripture is that whenever we come across a stranger who needs help, we should assist as much as possible -- not just on August 22, but on any day.
However, you can practice on National Be An Angel Day by helping as many people as possible.
Find a need and fill it. Reach out to people who least expect it. Offer a helping hand to someone. Give people a kind word and encourage them. They will be happy and you will feel good about what you have done. So, go ahead and be an angel.
