The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2017 NFL Draft needing help in the secondary, especially at the cornerback position. After they drafted Taco Charlton in the first round of the NFL Draft, there was rumbling by fans who wanted to see a cornerback in that round. Dallas made up for it on Day 2 when they drafted both Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis in the second and third rounds and now have an abundance of talented players at cornerback.

Chidobe Awuzie

The first pick on the second day of the 2017 NFL Draft for the Dallas Cowboys was Chidobe Awuzie, a cornerback from the Colorado Buffalos.

He is very adaptable in the secondary, playing at cornerback, free safety, strong safety, nickel slot, and even some outside linebacker in college. There is a great chance that Awuzie will be an immediate starter alongside Orlando Scandrick and Nolan Carroll. In college, he broke Colorado secondary records for tackles for a loss (26) and sacks (9). He also finished with 273 total tackles and that will be huge for the Cowboys in a secondary that will play much younger this season.

Jourdan Lewis

Jourdan Lewis was the third round 2017 NFL Draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys. The player came from the Michigan Wolverines and he has the skills to play both cornerback and safety positions. Lewis can play the slot and will also contribute on special teams.

Lewis ran a 4.45 on his Pro Day and was an All-American and All-Big 10 performer. However, the problem that he faces is that he is facing domestic violence charges that occurred in March with his girlfriend. Lewis said that he is completely innocent and believes he will have all charges dropped against him.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback positions

The Dallas Cowboys have gotten much younger in the secondary after the 2017 NFL Draft. Orlando Scandrick is the oldest player back there at 30-years-old. Before the NFL Draft, the Cowboys obviously needed help but now they have a ton of cornerbacks. Nolan Carroll II is also 30, after joining the team after playing with the Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles.

Anthony Brown is a second-year player at the age of 23. Now, they have two rookies at cornerback and if they work out, the Cowboys will have a nice future at the cornerback position. Former first-round draft pick Byron Jones (24) is at safety and on Day 3, the Cowboys will need to start looking at safeties to replace the departed Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox.
