The HIV-AIDS vaccination discovery made the world a better place to live in. The vaccination was discovered in Africa (Kenya) some time back. The vaccination was discovered by Prof. Thumbi Ndung’u who is the head of the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV pathogenic. The 47-year-old Professor presented his research findings two days ago at the on-going HIV-AIDS conference in Nairobi Kenya.
The good News is that the vaccine for the virus which has already wiped millions of people in the world is now at the Kenyatta National Hospital KEMRI offices. There was a lot of celebration in Kenya, the country where it was discovered following the announcement.
HIV-AIDS cost
It’s unfortunate that even if the vaccine is finally developed, it's so expensive that most people can't afford to buy it. According to the relevant sources, the vaccine will cost approximately 10 million Ksh. per head which is equivalent to 100,000 US dollars. The world invested approximately 868 million US dollars in HIV vaccine, research, and development.
So the discovery is a major progress in the free world.
Fight against HIV-AIDS
Back on May 18, 1997, US President Bill Clinton said that he was committed to lead the world to develop an AIDS vaccine within 10 years. But almost 20 years later, the world had been waiting the vaccine to be discovered. An AIDS vaccine is essential for the fight against HIV-AIDS. In Kenya, where the vaccine was discovered, researchers have been working for more than 15 years to make this dream a reality. Hundreds of men and women have volunteered to participate in vaccine clinical trials.
In 2009, an HIV-AIDS clinical trial showed that an experimental vaccine minimizes the risk of HIV transmissions. And early this year in South Africa, a trial to test a modified version of that vaccine which was redesigned to make it more protective was initiated. Prof. Ndungu discovered HIV subtype C, which is the most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. The HIV subtype C research had been abandoned by scientists for a long period of time.
