Apple has officially released its latest mobile operating system, the ios 11. The Cupertino-based multinational technology company requested everyone with a compatible device to download and install its latest iOS version.

According to tech website WCCFTech, old 32-bit Apple devices are no longer supported by iOS 11, therefore, devices like iPhone 5 or iPod touch fifth-generation can no longer be updated. Here are the complete lists of iOS 11-supported devices:

  • For iPhones: iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE and iPhone 5s.
  • For iPad: 12.9-inch iPad Pro first and second generation, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 5, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 4.
  • For iPod touch, only the sixth-generation iPod touch is compatible with iOS 11.

Not all features are available

There are lots of new and exciting features available on the new iOS 11 version.

However, there are also iOS 11 features which are exclusive only to iPhone X. These features are not even available on iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

There are new features which are solely dependent on the iPhone X's 3D face-scanning TrueDepth camera. One is Animoji, which is a voice-recording animated emoji which is accessible on Messages. Another feature is the Face ID security feature which replaces Touch ID as a biometric sensor.

There are also features available on iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, but not with other Apple devices. In particular is the Portrait Lighting which uses the dual-lens, depth-sensing camera and to simulate a range of lighting effects, such as Contour Light, Natural Light, Stage Light, Stage Light Mono, and Studio Light.

New and upgraded iOS features

In addition to Animoji, the Messages app got other updates.

This includes a redesigned app drawer which makes it easier to access. Apple also introduced “Messages in iCloud,” which makes messages accessible on other Apple platforms. Also, Apple Pay is now accessible in the Messages app.

Apple's AI personal assistance Siri now has a friendlier voice that sounds more natural. With Deep Learning, Siri will develop and change over time the way she talks.

Supported languages include English, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Other prominent changes and new features integrated by Apple on iOS 11 are the following: SiriKit, HEVC Video Encoding and HEIF Image Format, Camera Depth API & improved image quality, redesigned Control and Notification Centers, and the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature. Finally, the iOS 11 is the gateway to accessing Augmented Reality (AR).
