Apple is rumored to unveil its highly anticipated next-generation smartwatch, possibly dubbed as Apple Watch Series 3, sometime next month alongside the 10th anniversary special iPhone 8 iteration, iPhone 7s Plus, iPhone 7s and a 4K-capable Apple TV.
Smartwatch enters final testing phase
According to MacRumors, the next-gen smartwatch has already entered the final testing phase in the manufacturing process. As per the report, which cites unnamed supply chain sources, the Taiwan-based manufacturer Quanta Computer is all geared up to start shipping the new Watch Series 3 during the fourth quarter of the year to line up with the smartwatch’s release.
The tech giant’s first generation and second generation smartwatches were also manufactured by Quanta Computer.
Notably, the Apple Watch Series 2 model was launched alongside the iPhone 7 last September. Therefore, it is highly likely that the Series 3 model might get a September launch as well.
Device will not support cellular voice calls
According to Apple Insider, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the upcoming smartwatch will be made available in LTE and non-LTE models in two size configurations- 38mm and 42mm. Kuo reportedly has a good track record of predicting about new Apple products and changes. He believes that the cellular-enabled Apple Watch Series 3 will support VoIP calling only and not traditional cellular voice calls, at least not initially.
Kuo has predicted that the Apple Watch unit sales for the current year will remain between 8 and 9 million.
It is expected that the cellular voice call feature might get added as part of a future software update. The non-LTE model is expected to get a speed boost and a better battery life. The wearable device will keep the same design a sits predecessor.
The smartwatch is expected to get a front-facing camera that will enable users to take selfies and making video calls. Among other specs, the Apple Watch 3 is rumored to feature a 1.65 inch micro-LED display, an upgraded processor as well as the Cupertino tech giant’s latest wearable operating system WatchOS 4. Rumors are that the upcoming smartwatch will come with new tracking sensors to track blood sugar and heart attack signs.
Apple, however, has not announced anything about Apple Watch Series 3’s specs, features, release date or price details.
