Nicalis and Headup Games are collaborating to release "The Binding Of Isaac: Afterbirth+" to retail in Australian and European territories on the Nintendo Switch. This partnership goes further than "The Binding of Isaac" as they tease further announcements in the future.

Genesis 22:10

For the uninitiated, "The Binding of Isaac" is a roguelike dungeon crawler with heavy themes of religious persecution and neglect. Players were in control of a small child named Isaac. When Isaac's religious mother hears the voice of God commanding her to slay her son, she bursts into his room to end his life.

Armed only with his tears, Isaac retreats into a dark and unfriendly basement filled with twisted creatures who also want him dead. In there, Isaac must also face against God, the Devil, and his Mother.

The original game was released in 2011 for Windows, OS X, and Linux. It was followed up in 2014 by "Rebirth:" a retro style remake with a different soundtrack, additional gameplay modes, and newly animated endings. This remake was then followed up with two expansions the following year called "Afterbirth" and "Afterbirth+."

Nintend-no 3DS?

The series has had a strange relationship with retail outlets and publishers. The original iteration was never ported to any consoles. It was only released in digital distribution outlets in America but did see a retail release called "The Unholy Edition" in other territories.

There was a 3DS port planned, but it was canceled due to Nintendo's censorship policies. This made it a bit surprising when Nintendo later approved of the remake "Rebirth" for release on Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch.

Our favorite little boy

Tyrone Rodriguez, president of Nicalis, claims that Headup Games was chosen as a partner to take care of their European fanbase.

Both companies have expressed much enthusiasm for this partnership. This isn't the first "Binding of Isaac" related product Headup Games has been involved in. Founder of Headup Games, Dieter Schoeller, says, "We are thrilled to be working on The Binding of Isaac again. A couple years back we launched the PC Collector's Edition for the very first Isaac game on PC, and it's time to open a new chapter for our favorite little boy."

Release date and price

"The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+" is slated for a release to the Nintendo Switch in the 2nd quarter of 2017 in Australian and European territories. The suggested retail price is 39.99 pounds.
