reEarl Thomas has been fined by the NFL for his gesture during the Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals game on September 30. Late in the game, Thomas broke his leg, ending his season. When he was being carted off the field, he flipped off the Seahawks bench. Now, the league has come in and given him a huge fine for that gesture, sending a message that they felt it was inappropriate.
The NFL fine for Earl Thomas
The gesture has cost Thomas $13,369 from his paycheck. The league stated that this was deemed as unsportsmanlike conduct by the All-Pro safety, even if it was toward his own team.
It followed a $10,026 fine that he had received the prior week for taking a bow in the direction of the Dallas Cowboys' sideline. He is wracking up the fines this year, but this may have been the last one, as his broken leg will cost him the rest of the regular season.
Thomas still gets his full paycheck from Seahawks
Even though Thomas won't play for the Seahawks again this season, he will receive full game checks for the rest of the 2018 NFL campaign. A team can't cut a player once they have been injured, thus guaranteeing the rest of his contract with the team. At the end of the 2018 NFL season, Thomas will then become a free agent. As a free agent, he can sign with a team of his choosing.
He could also come back to the Seahawks if both sides could find some common ground.
The 2018 Seattle Seahawks at a precipice
After beating the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals in consecutive weeks, the Seattle Seahawks are now 2-2 on the season. They have to take on the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5, though, putting the team in a really difficult spot. It's almost a must-win game, even though it is still very early in the season. Winning against a divisional opponent is very important, but it will be very hard to do without Earl Thomas. The defense is going to be in for a tough task against Rams quarterback Jared Goff, putting the entire season on a precipice.
The Rams are seven-point favorites over the Seahawks, even though the game is taking place in Seattle.
It has a 1:25 PM PT start time and will get covered by FOX on television. Winning this game is huge for either team. If the Seahawks can pull out a victory, they will move within one game of first place in the NFC West. If the Rams win, the team would be 5-0 on the season and a full three games ahead of the next divisional team. The Rams beat the Minnesota Vikings last week, giving the team a nice boost, but anything can happen in a divisional game.
