San Francisco 49ers defensive end Cassius Marsh provided detail of his nine-game stint with the New England Patriots last season, saying he was misused as a coverage linebacker. In an interview with Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, Marsh said playing in New England was enough to make him doubt his desire to play football. According to Marsh, the Patriots asked him some things that he had never done, like running backs and receivers, far from his job of rushing the passer as a defensive lineman. “They don’t have fun there. There’s nothing fun about it.

There’s nothing happy about it. I didn’t enjoy any of my time there,” said Marsh, who was waived in November after confronting Patriots head coach Bill Belichick after he played just two snaps against the Oakland Raiders.

Marsh did not provide details about his confrontation with Belichick but said that he was not a fan of what’s happening with the Patriots. According to Marsh, he asked to get cut so he can play elsewhere. “I had confidence that I would have an opportunity elsewhere and I would take advantage of it,” Marsh stressed. The 49ers immediately pounced on Marsh, signing him to a two-year deal worth $7.7 million, including an estimated $2 million as a roster bonus.

Marsh praises Garoppolo

With the 49ers, Marsh joined former Patriots teammate, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who played as backup signal-caller to Tom Brady for almost four years. The 49ers signed Marsh a few weeks after acquiring Garoppolo from the Patriots via a trade for a 2018 second-round pick. According to Marsh, he expects Garoppolo to succeed as the 49ers starting quarterback as he personally witnessed his body of work with the Patriots.

“I knew because I was with the Patriots and he would shred our defense every day,” said Marsh, adding that Garoppolo looked no different when Brady was on the field. Marsh said Garoppolo is a disciplined player and he’s happy to be playing alongside him.

All eyes on Garoppolo

All eyes will be on Garoppolo, as he signed a five-year deal worth $137.5 million with the 49ers, despite playing in just six games last season, with five starts.

Garoppolo is set to earn an average of $27.5 million per year in San Francisco. Since he arrived in the Bay Area, Garoppolo played six games in the regular season and went undefeated in five starts to help the team finish with a 6-10 mark. During that span, Garoppolo completed 120-of-178 passes for 1,560 yards and seven touchdowns with five interceptions.
