History can show up at any point, and sometimes it shows up on special occasions. Sunday was Mother's Day and a day that neither Milwaukee Brewers No. 12 prospect Freddy Peralta nor his family will ever forget. Peralta was expected to pitch for the Class AAA Sky Sox. But, when Brewers starter Chase Anderson came down with an illness, they called on Peralta to make the start in Colorado, as he was already situated 70 miles south in Colorado Springs with the Sky Sox.
Peralta made a name for himself
As mentioned before, Peralta was called up to replace starter Chase Anderson, who is also likely to miss his next start as well, according to Chris Cwik of Yahoo! Sports.
The Dominican pitcher had family fly in to watch him pitch for the first time professionally, but they did not expect it would be in a Major League Baseball Stadium. But everything fell into place, and, with his family in the stands, Peralta did not deter from dominance. Peralta struck out 13 batters in the game and went 5 2/3 innings, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. A single by Rockies outfielder David Dahl broke up the no-hit bid, but Peralta stayed in the game to get one final out before being pulled by manager Craig Counsell.
"He was magnificent," Counsell said -- as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentenial. "He got his nerves out after the first three pitches of the game. Then, it just kept getting better."
Peralta had his mom, dad, girlfriend, and other family members in the stands at Coors Field.
One for the record books
The 175-pound right-hander could not ask for a better MLB debut. He helped improve the Brewers' Mother's Day record to 33-19.
Peralta is tied for third for most strikeouts in a Major League debut, but he did break the record for most strikeouts in a debut that lasted less than seven innings. And six of those strikeouts came against the brunt of Colorado's lineup that included Carlos Gonzalez, Trevor Story, and Nolan Arenado.
Former Brewers pitcher Steve Woodard formerly held Milwaukee's record of 12 strikeouts over eight innings pitched. Woodard made his MLB debut on July 28, 1997.
In the minors with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, Peralta is 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA. He's given up one home run in the minors while striking out 46 batters in 34.2 innings pitched. It is unclear at this point whether Peralta will get another chance to pitch. The Brewers are currently in a three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
