Seattle Seahawks draft grades are already coming in from Day 1 of The 2018 NFL Draft. The Seahawks made the bold move to trade the No. 18 selection to the Green Bay Packers in order to accrue more draft picks. As part of the deal, they acquired the No. 27 selection in the first round. With that pick, the Seahawks took San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny.
The reactions of the on-air broadcasters may have predicted how the NFL draft grades were going to look for the Seahawks. A report released by NFL.com gives the Seahawks a D for Day 1 of the draft.
Analyst Chad Reuter states that “I believe Penny is a good back, but they picked him too early. This is the modus operandi for the Seahawks in recent year, picking someone in the first round much earlier than most people project.” It’s worth mentioning that the Green Bay Packers got an A grade for their selection of Louisville cornerback Jaire Alexander as the No. 18 pick.
More grades from Day 1 of the NFL Draft
CBS Sports also provided a Seattle Seahawks draft grade on Day 1, giving the team a D for the Rashaad Penny pick. Pete Prisco provided the first-round grades for the 2018 NFL Draft, beginning with a C for the Cleveland Browns after they selected Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. As for the Penny pick, Prisco stated that “He’s a nice runner, but they have so many other needs and there are better backs.
Weird.”
There were a lot of A’s given on Day 1 of the draft by Pete Prisco. On the opposite end of the spectrum, though, the Seahawks received the only D, echoing a lot of sentiment about going with Penny this early.
Room for improvement
Sports Illustrated also provided draft grades, which weren’t as bad as other sites when it came to the Seahawks.
The site noted that it was surprising when the Seahawks went with a running back, but even more so when it wasn’t Derrius Guice. They didn’t want to call the pick a blunder, citing the past successes of general manager John Schneider, but SI did give the Seahawks a C- grade.
The Seattle Seahawks still have eight more picks this weekend to fill holes on offense and defense.
This could also mean that the Seahawks’ draft grade can improve. The 2018 NFL Draft resumes at 4 PM PT on Friday night (April 27).
