Alonso Fernando’s car at the 2017 Indy 500 rolled out onto the track with a livery in sharp contrast to its Formula 1 cousins.
The 2017 Formula 1 cars were black with spaces of orange and white, a change brought about to signify the departure of longtime boss Ron Dennis. The Indy car, however, carried an orange color that was a direct throwback to the color founder Bruce McLaren chose for his cars.
Bruce McLaren ran this specific orange on all of his cars, the CANAM, Formula 1, and Indy cars. The color, therefore, a distinct and vibrant orange, became known as McLaren orange and has been called that ever since. Now, as rumors of a new livery circulate, theories vary on whether the new color scheme will mirror the one seen on Fernando Alonso’s Indy car. The Indy car garnered a great deal of popularity and positive press, along with Alonso.
Alonso admits he hasn’t seen the new cars yet, but would like to see them in the signature color of the team. Alonso also said he would like to go back and race at Indy again, although it won’t be this season. This season he will race at Monaco and will do so for the remainder of his Formula 1 career. After that, however, the former world champion said he would like to give Indy another run.

The last several years have been a struggle for McLaren. Their cars have been notoriously unreliable and Fernando Alonso, while demonstrating great patience, has also expressed great frustration with them. McLaren’s Executive Director, Zak Brown, said that the team will be undergoing the “biggest change” of all of the teams.
This could mean many things for McLaren, who could use a revolution in everything from livery to performance. Brown is hoping that this is exactly what will happen come time for the Australian Grand Prix, where McLaren will have a new look, and a new chance to win to start the new season.
Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsports. It is in Formula 1 that fans can see the future through, through the innovation and technology the series displays. Formula 1, however, cherishes its past, as well as its future. If McLaren does indeed choose the famous McLaren orange for its livery this year, it will be doing something uniquely Formula 1-like. It will be using the past to launch themselves into the future.
