Sunday marked the debut of a number of talented rookies from the most recent NFL Draft. Two of them stepped on the field as the Houston Texans hosted the Jacksonville Jaguars. Leonard Fournette had a big day for the Jaguars while Deshaun Watson got to take over the reigns of the Texans' offense for the second half. The game also featured star player JJ Watt making his big return to the field after missing 13 games last season due to back surgery. Here's the latest Texans vs. Jaguars game recap including top players, stats, a standings update, and what's coming up next for these teams.

NFL game recap

The Jacksonville Jaguars saw an impressive debut from running back Leonard Fournette. The former LSU star had 100 yards on the ground and a touchdown for his pro debut. Fournette also had three catches for 24 yards in the game, while Allen Hurns led all receivers with 42 yards on three catches. Quarterback Blake Bortles also threw for a touchdown along with 125 yards on 11-for-21 passing. Dante Fowler also returned a fumble 53 yards for a touchdown in the game with the Jaguars defense playing a big role in helping today's win. Defensive player Calais Campbell had four sacks in the game, while Yannick Ngakoue came up with two of them.

On the opposing side, Tom Savage struggled as the Texans' starter.

Savage was 7-for-13 with 62 yards and was sacked six times in the first half. That allowed rookie Deshaun Watson to get into the game for the second half. Watson went 12-for-23 with 102 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in his pro debut. DeAndre Hopkins had seven catches for 55 yards and a score, but that was it for points on the board for Houston.

The Jaguars had 10 sacks and forced three fumbles between the two different Houston quarterbacks in the game.

Even though the Texans had more plays and more first downs, it didn't matter. The Jacksonville Jaguars still finished with over 400 yards of total offense in today's game while holding Houston under 300. The Jacksonville defense clearly played a huge role in helping take this team to an undefeated start to their season.

Standings & what's next

The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to a great start with today's victory. The team is now 1-0 to start the season and 1-0 on the road. Unfortunately, the win today didn't come without a loss as wide receiver Allen Robinson appears to have an ACL injury which will be looked at. Next up for Jacksonville is a meeting with the Tennessee Titans at home on next Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Houston Texans were looking to get a big win in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Things didn't quite go their way and they now begin the season at 0-1 with a 0-1 home record. They have a short week as they will play again on Thursday night at 8:25 p.m. Eastern Time at the Cincinnati Bengals.
