The 2017 Us Open started on Monday from New York in Flushing Meadows. The day featured some upsets on the main courts, including in matches involving Johanna Konta and Jack Sock. Konta went out to Aleksandra Krunic while Jordan Thompson of Australia eliminated Jack Sock.

Konta won't be No. 1 after all

The scoring line in the Konta upset was 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 for the underdog Krunic.

The result sees the British player eliminated from the tournament and the race for top spot. Heading into the event Konta made the Wimbledon semifinals in her last Grand Slam out, defeating Simona Halep en route. Konta was among the huge list of players that had at least a small chance of getting to No. 1 with the results from Flushing Meadows. However, the abrupt end to her tournament will end any such talk before it develops with any kind of seriousness. For Krunic, she now has a look at the draw from the point of view of the 7th seed. Having defeated Konta, Krunic cannot face a higher-seeded player than 7th before the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows should she continue her strong play.

America loses a hopeful player

Jack Sock's loss concludes what is a poor 2017 Grand Slam season. In 2016 he was able to make the fourth round in Flushing Meadows after making at least the 2nd round of all other Slams that year. But this year a third-round appearance at the Australian Open is as good as it gets for Sock following his loss to Thompson in five sets. Sock, one of America's hopes in the draw, was seeded 13th in the event so a lower-ranked player will be in the fourth round following his exit. For Thompson, the result marks just the third time that he has been able to make the second round of a major. Thus far in his career he has never made a third round in a Grand Slam, so he will be looking at doing that later this week.

At the time of this writing Lauren Davis was among the other seeded players in the women's draw that saw elimination. She was the last seed (No. 32) in the women's draw and she fell to Sofia Kenin in what is only a mild upset. Furthermore, both Ana Konjuh and Kiki Bertens went out of Flushing Meadows on Monday, players that were seeded 21st and 24th respectively. Two-seeded Simona Halep also saw elimination but whether that was a major upset or not is debatable given that she fell to Maria Sharapova, a former champion at Flushing Meadows that is now 7-0 against Halep in heads-up play. In the men's singles draw 32nd-seed Robin Haase, 25th-seeded Karen Khachanov, and 21st-seeded David Ferrer were all eliminated in early action.
