The New York Knicks made a deal on Tuesday, but it wasn't with Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks agreed to a one-year deal worth the veteran's minimum with Michael Beasley. Over in Philadelphia, Jahlil Okafor is happy to be with the 76ers despite being subjected to trade rumors all offseason.
Beasley finalizes roster
This will be his sixth team in 10 seasons. Beasley was originally drafted as the No. 2 overall pick by the Miami Heat. He also has stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, and Milwaukee Bucks.
It is unclear where Beasley will fit with New York's plans.
As of now, Anthony is still on the roster. If Anthony were to be moved, Beasley would likely get significant minutes. Beasley could be the backup to Anthony if no deal is done. He averaged 9.4 points and 3.4 rebounds last season in 56 games.
The Knicks now have 15 contracts, so their roster is finalized. It is the second major offseason deal they have made this summer. The team signed Tim Hardaway Jr. to a deal to be the team's starting shooting guard. If Anthony is moved, the team could sport a lineup of Hardaway Jr., Beasley, Kristaps Porzingis, Ron Baker, and Joakim Noah.
Okafor happy to be a 76er
Okafor credited the fans of Philadelphia being great to him. He also credited his coaches and teammates for being supportive of him in a video tweeted by Tom Moore.
After an offseason, and a regular season of trade rumors, Okafor could be disappointed with his current playing situation, but he seems very upbeat. This is great news for the 76ers as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 draft was brought into an awkward situation.
Okafor was drafted to a team that already had Joel Embiid and Nerlens Noel.
Not to mention, the 76ers style of play was not a right fit for him either. However, Noels was traded to the Dallas Mavericks last season which opens up a door for Okafor.
This is the season for the former lottery pick to prove himself. Okafor has played just 103 games in a season and has not played more than 53 games in a single season due to injuries.
He has a career average of 14.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Now, with the 76ers looking to make a run at the playoffs with a young 76er team, Okafor is going to be needed. The team has a young core of Embiid, Okafor, Dario Saric, Markelle Fultz, and the new signings of JJ Redick and Amir Johnson. Okafor could be even happier to be in Philadelphia if he helps the team make the postseason.
